More About Reena's Author Visits

Reena believes learning happens naturally when people are busy enjoying themselves. Her presentations, author talks and workshops are usually interactive. They revolve around the themes touched on in her stories, Surprising Mrs Rhubarbson and Fragrant Soup.

Parts of a Visit

What Reena Offers

Here are some of the many things she does!

Dramatic Readings

Whether it's at a kindergarten with the big version of her picture book or a whole school assembly where she's doing a dramatic reading with the digital version of her story, Reena knows how to capture an audience with her 'voices' when she does her dramatic readings!

SONG AND DANCE

For the youngest audiences, Reena knows how important movement is and she has found creative ways to include movement in her presentations for them. She provides a fun and inclusive environment to make them want to sing along, get up and dance or do both!

Author Talks

Reena's Author Talks are popular and interactive. Both local schools and international schools have worked with Reena to have her deliver one of her existing talks, presenting on specific themes or customise something for them.  These often involve participation from students (and staff)!

Fun Activities

Reena likes to make students think. She knows every student group contains a mixture of learners--visual, audio, kinaesthetic and more! She designs her visits to target the majority of the range, especially because she often writes about food!

Creative writing workshops

Having taught creative writing for over 13.5 years, Reena knows a thing or two about making writing fun! As part of her author visits, she offers creative writing workshops connected to the themes of her books and inspires students to build a love for the craft!

Judging

Over the years, Reena has been invited to judge competitions at schools, either as part of a panel or on her own. Students enjoy receiving feedback from her, whether written or verbal because she always tries to provide a balanced response to acknowledge efforts and highlight areas for them to improve upon.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

Reena loves working with a full school, which is why she thrives when she gets the opportunity to present at whole school assemblies, which can sometimes mean working with over 500-900 students in the same space. Reena is able to cater to the varied age ranges, focusing on one common goal: relatability and engagement. School principals are often surprised and appreciative of how interactive her assemblies are and students enjoy the the entire experience!

Q and A Sessions

"How long did it take you to write your book?"

"Where do you get your ideas from?"

"What conditioner do you use to make your hair so shiny?"

These are just some of the many entertaining questions that students ask. However, sometimes shy hands go up and ask profound questions like "This is the first time someone that looks like me has come to share a book. Does that mean, I'm allowed to be an author too?" and it paves the way for some meaningful discussions.

Collaborative STORYTELLING

Sometimes being creative is scary and difficult, but Reena takes the trouble out of the process and inserts plenty of fun! Working together and trying ideas out  becomes low risk and high value, leaving students excited and willing to make their own attempts.

What Age GRoups are the Visits For?

For Kindergarten and Pre-School Students

Reena has worked with many kindergarten and pre-school students. She understands where they are at developmentally, including their short attention spans and their need to move and wiggle. She has built in a song and dance routine for her presentations to this age group, keeping things fun and exciting. Her sessions often end with students asking her to read the book and or sing the song "once more"!

For Primary Students

Once students have reached Primary School level, their needs change. Reena likes to challenge their enquiring minds by leading them through carefully planned discussions and activities that allow them to draw on the knowledge from their units of enquiry and the details from the topics they are covering in their curriculum. Reena knows their abilities and interests differ dramatically and her writing workshops cater beautifully to a variety of needs, leaving students entertained and wanting to give writing a shot.

For Secondary Students

At Secondary School level, students want to have their ideas taken seriously. They want to be challenged critically, but most of all, they want to express themselves better, without being judged. They want to be drawn out of their shell, without feeling exposed. Reena knows how to do this. Using her drama and theatre skills as well as her writing craft, Reena is able to create the exact environment that's encouraging and non-threatening, allowing youth to try their hand at something or share their opinions where they would otherwise choose to remain silent.

Ms. Reena delivered an engaging presentation for our Year 4 students during her visit to ICHKHLY. She addressed the concept of heritage in an age-appropriate manner, providing excellent examples for our students. She shared her process of creating her book, Fragrant Soup, including insights into her researching methods. Ms. Reena also conducted a writing workshop, giving students the opportunity to apply their knowledge. Her sharing was an excellent bridge to both our Creativity and Heritage Units of Inquiry. Thank you, Ms. Reena!

"Reena captured the imagination of our students from the moment she began her presentation. She is a fantastic story teller who engaged the children in every part of the story. Reena took time to get to know the names of our children before asking them their response to a question, which encouraged them to participate in the story. Reena gave the children an opportunity to ask questions about her job as an author, which provided a real life experience on World Book Day. The writing workshop for some of our creative writing finalists was the perfect opportunity to explore the writing process and they were thrilled to be authors for the day. Many of the children purchased books to tell the story of Mrs Rhubarbson at home. We are so grateful to Reena for making World Book Day a memorable experience for our children."

Ms. Reena is a fantastic story teller who really knows how to draw students into the story. She did a great job at engaging the student to help them learn more about what an Author is, both by telling stories and by answering student questions. The writing workshop was a great way for our grade 3 students to get involved in the writing process and to learn from a real author a few writing ideas. Many students from our school purchased her books so they could go home and read it to their parents or younger siblings. I hope other schools have an opportunity to experience this kind and engaging author.

Thanks again for coming in this week. I have spoken with staff and have bullet pointed their feedback:

    - Very appropriate for the age group being taught. Pitch was excellent.

    - The children really enjoyed the storytelling session. The voices and audience participation made it particularly entertaining for them.

    - Some children have gone on to write one of the longest pieces of writing they have ever produced - We will be taking this further in the coming weeks to see what else we can get from the children.

    - Workshop sessions were the right amount of time and children were engaged.

    Hi Ms. Reena,

First, let me thank you for coming to share your story with us this week. I felt like it resonated with the age group of my class, as well as the other children who attended. You were warm and kind and patient with the children from the start. It is no small feat to capture the attention of such an audience! The story resonated with the children for several reasons, I think. The characters were all animals that most of the children know well, or are learning about. I also like that they were all positive in their efforts to help the birthday recipient. Your language and speech as a storyteller was excellent, as the children were all focused on every pause. I was impressed with the experience and thank you again for signing all the names of the children in the book we purchased for our classroom. Thank you and I wish you all the best in the future.

Reena Bhojwani was the pre-note speaker for the (online) Writing Roundtable event we had in 2022. She presented on the theme “Writing with / in Social Media in the Age of Pandemonium”.

It was a pleasure to work with Reena on this project. She was open-minded and had many creative and unusual ideas about how to go about the project, one of which was to have attendees feel like they were on a “Choose Your Own Adventure” journey. Presenting online can be quite challenging. That coupled with directing attendees to do specific tasks on social media could have meant losing the audience completely, but Reena managed to keep the reigns on things. She encouraged participation, added humour and had engagement from those that attended throughout the talk. I would recommend her as a presenter or speaker for talks at schools, online or in-person, without hesitation.

Ms Reena Bhojwani, author and former creative writing teacher, conducted a workshop exclusive to our Lower Primary Parents. During this interactive workshop she shared some valuable tips on how best to support and their children to become better writers. Parents agreed that this workshop helped them to better understand the writing process and feel more confident in spending time helping their children in writing. We are looking forward to the one for upper primary parents soon.

Thank you for coming to our school today and sharing your lovely book and inspirational writing process. I was able to catch the stories you shared of how you became an author, and I loved all the anecdotes. You have really documented your process beautifully. I think you helped our students feel safe about making mistakes and understanding that this is all part of the process of being a writer.
